Are you bothered by a long or “big” forehead? When a facial feature is sized out of proportion with the rest of the face, it can significantly compromise your overall beauty and attractiveness. Your forehead is no different. While not all long foreheads are a source of aesthetic concern, they can often give the appearance of a receding hairline because the distance of the brows to the hair line is noticeably large.
What is Foreheadplasty?
In many cases, long or high foreheads can be corrected with a procedure called foreheadplasty. Since it is also a procedure that improves the appearance of a high hairline, foreheadplasty may also be called Hairline Lowering. Regardless of what you name it, foreheadplasty is a cosmetic surgery that reduces the size of an elongated forehead by removing a portion of the forehead skin and creating a lower hairline.
Fortunately, this procedure involves inconspicuous or camouflaged incisions that are placed along the anterior hairline in order to release and advance the hair-bearing scalp forward. While the extent of the hairline advancement is dependent on many factors (hairline height, scalp laxity and patient goals), most hairlines can be shortened between 2-4 cm.
Are You a Candidate for Forehead Reduction?
Most, but not all, individuals who are unhappy with their long forehead are candidates for a foreheadplasty. It is important that a patient have a stable hairline and sufficient hair density or thickness. If not, hair transplantation may be considered as an alternative or pre-requisite to hairline lowering.
In general, the ideal candidates for forehead reduction surgery will fit some of the following criteria:
- A high hairline and a large forehead
- Low or heavy brows (in some cases)
- Individuals with supple forehead skin and a scalp of sufficient laxity
- Individuals with thick hair density and no family history of hair loss
- Men who have a new hairline created by hair grafting
- Those in good physical and mental health who have realistic expectations for surgery
