Surgery For Your Acne?

Beverly Hills CA Plastic SurgeonPerhaps one of the most devastating aspects of severe acne is the scarring it can leave behind. There are many acne scar treatments available, including chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser therapy. However, they are not effective for everyone and many require multiple treatment sessions. What acne sufferers may not realize is that there is also a solution in plastic surgery. Beverly Hills Center offers specialized facelift techniques to restore facial skin that has been chronically affected by acne and deep acne scarring.

How Do Acne Scars Form?

Acne scars are generally the result of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores engorged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. When the pore swells, it causes the follicle wall to break. While a shallow lesion will heal quickly, a deep break in the pore wall will cause infected material to overflow into the surrounding tissues. This creates a deeper lesion. Acne scars can be atrophic, meaning there is a loss of tissue. These depressed scars are referred to as either “icepick” scarring or “boxcar” scars.

When Is Surgery Best?

More severe cases of acne may need surgical intervention. Depressed and sunken areas of skin improve only marginally from needle-stimulation therapies or facial fillers. Severe acne scarring may not fully respond to chemical peels or even laser treatments. In such cases, excision and closure techniques may be best.

In select patients, especially those with heavy anterior cheeks, Deep Plane Cheek and Face Lifting techniques are proving very effective. A deep plane cheek lift can spread and lessen the density of adult acne scars and effectively reposition heavy anterior cheeks to a more appropriate superior and lateral position. At Beverly Hills Center, our patients have been ecstatic about the results, especially when combined with laser resurfacing procedures.

If you think your acne scars are beyond help, consider the options offered by an experienced, board certified facial plastic surgeon. For the right patient, surgical acne treatment can be the final solution to more confident skin.
